ACCIDENT
23 killed and injured in Buri Ram were illegal Lao migrants
BANGKOK: -- Director general of the Department of Employment yesterday revealed that nearly all 23 victims of the horrific crash on Monday in Buri Ram's Ban Dan district were illegal Laotian workers.
Only one person was undergoing the national identification process, Prawit Kiangpol said.
So, the department would send the workers who survived back to Laos and would work with anti-human trafficking police to block the smuggling of alien workers into the country, he said.
The death toll from the accident rose to 19 yesterday, as two more succumbed to fatal injuries in Buri Ram Hospital, while four of the five still in hospital remain critical.
The pickup truck, carrying 23 workers and one driver, was heading for Ubon Ratchathani when it crashed into a tree.

...Ward Off Ghost
Buriram Villagers Use Red Shirts To Ward Off Ghost
The Thai northeastern region is closely associated with the Redshirts movement, but three villages in the region adopt red shirts for a supernatural reason, rather than a political one.
Many residents in the three villages of Buriram province -
Ban Khok Sa-ad
,
Ban Khok Yai
, and
Ban Tago
- have taken to hanging red shirts in front of their houses with cardboard or text imprinted on the shirts which read "Nobody′s Home". Another variation says "Only Angels Live Here. No Humans".
They said the gesture is meant to fool bad spirit of a headless evil who has haunted the villages for weeks.
Rumours in the communities claim that the headless ghost, said to be a dark tall man, will possess individuals and take away their lives.
Villagers told our correspondent that the haunting started when three people have already died from unknown causes - which they attributed to the ghost.
However, the villagers said, there were also survivors who were woken up in time by their relatives as they were possessed by the ghost in their sleep.
A psychic has been brought to the villages to act as the medium to the alleged spirit, and informed the villagers that the spirit belonged to a headless ghost.
The diagnosis greatly frightened the villagers, but the psychic advised the residents to hang red shirts in front of their house as a precaution.
Many residents in the three villages said they are now living in fears, they told our correspondent.
Many would not venture out of their homes after early evenings to avoid the encounter with the said ghost.
Mr. Sompong Prom-Ngam, Deputy Headsman of the Khok Sa-ad Village, stated that most villagers are scared and have been restless after the occurrence of an incident.
He claimed that one of the ghosts′ victims was a man in his 40s who died without pre-existing medical condition.
"Many people couldn′t sleep at night, even though they already hang the red shirts in front of their houses," Mr. Sompong said.
According to Mr. Sompong, there are also residents refuse to believe in the story about the ghosts, but they did not openly lob-loo (ridicule) the belief either, since death still stalks the communities.

SUPER GT RACE
Buriram track to host Super GT race in October
Buriram United president Newin Chidchob, third from left, poses with MCOT president Anek Permvongseni at a conference yesterday.
The new Buriram United International Circuit will host the world-famous Grand Touring car race in October
BURIRAM: -- Thailand's first international-standard motor-racing track, Buriram United International Circuit (BRIC), will host the world famous Grand Touring (GT) car race in October as its inaugural event.
Having clinched the hosting rights for Japan's renowned super-car race for two years, Newin Chidchob, president of Thai Premier League football club Buriram United who also serves as BRIC's consultant, revealed that hosting a world-class race like Super GT was "dream" come true.
"BRIC was born because of our dream as motor sport lovers who wanted to see a world-class racing track in the country.
It's thrilling that our track will be opened with the first-ever Super GT race staged in Thailand.
"The event will be a major boost to Buri Ram's tourism and will bring fame to the country by putting Thailand on the motor sports map," Newin told a packed conference at Pullman King Power Hotel yesterday.
At the same conference, state-owned public broadcaster MCOT was unveiled as the event's official broadcaster.
The company said the race, due to be held on October 7, would be televised in digital high definition.
"Securing the content of such a top-class racing event like Super GT, will help build the MCOT brand as leaders in HD broadcasting.
We see this as an opportunity to showcase our capacity in broadcasting motor sports events that require high technology to transmit the thrills and spills on the track and make the viewers feel as if they were at the venue.
It's a challenge as we're about to enter the digital-TV era," said Anek Permvongseni, MCOT president.
BRIC's young director, Tanaisiri Chanvittayarom, said the brand-new circuit, still under construction, would be ready to host the penultimate race of the Super GT season starting next month.
"The track is now 60-per-cent complete, which is on track to stage the Super GT race in October.
Well-known track designer Hermann Tilke designed the circuit and the German also monitored the whole process of track building.
"The main feature of the track is a long straight on which drivers could race as fast as 300km per hour, while the grand-stand spectators could also watch every corner of the track," said Tanaisiri.

EBOLA DISEASE
Buriram prepares medical experts to cope with danger of Ebola
BURIRAM, 11 August 2014 (NNT) :
Buriram Public Health has ordered every district to station medical experts at isolation rooms and in pharmacies, ready to cope with the Ebola viral disease should any emergency cases emerge.
Meanwhile Ban Kruat Hospital has teamed up with authorities to closely inspect travelers at the Chong Sai Taku border crossing as a further safeguard against the disease reaching Thailand.
The current outbreak in Africa has already caused a large number of the infected to die, and has brought about worldwide alarm.
Even though an outbreak of the Ebola virus in Thailand is considered extremely unlikely, the institutions concerned are staying alert to any sign of the disease and other emerging infectious diseases (EIDs).
The medical experts are required to study and diagnose diseases, isolate patients, and call on the mobile medical teams as needed in order to prevent any outbreaks of a dangerous illness.
Provincial Public Health has reiterated that hospitals and public health offices near Chong Sai Taku border crossing are to monitor and prevent other disease outbreaks as well.

TOURISTS HEADING TO ISSAN
More tourists are heading to Isaan this weekend
BURIRAM 5 December 2014 (NNT)
More tourists are traveling to the Northeast this weekend to experience the cold weather.
More than 10,000 visitors are expected to visit Phanom Rung Historical Park in Buriram this weekend to admire the rock castle built in the old Khmer architectural style during the 10th to 13th centuries.
The chilly weather in the region has also attracted a higher number of tourists while the park has also waived entry fees in celebration of the national Father’s Day.
In Surin, the declining temperature is also drawing more people to Wat Khao Sala Atulthanajaro Buddhist Park in Bua Chet District, to observe the scenery on the Thai-Cambodian border and pay respect to several Buddha statutes including the huge Nak Prok -- a seated one protected by the 7-headed naga.

DROUGHT RAGES ON
Buriram water usage jumps, as drought rages on
BURIRAM, 6 Mar 2015, (NNT)
As the haze weather condition from drought rages on, the Northeastern Province of Buriram has reported that its average daily water usage of the local has jumped to 21,000 cubic meters, an increase of 2-3,000 cubic meter from the usual.
According to the Waterworks Office in Buriram, the temperature in the Northeastern region at this time of year is between 36-38 degrees Celsius during the day, and will likely be even higher during the month of April and May, the hottest period of the year.
According to officials, the locals reportedly consumed 653,000 cubic meters of water during April of last year.
The figure is expected to remain the same or even higher this year.
In order to avoid water shortages, the provincial waterworks and the irrigation office plan to release water from the nearby Huay Talad Reservoir to the Huay Jorakay Reservoir, the province's source of raw water for tap water production.
To prevent shortages, the Office plans to draw more water from the Mart river if needed, said the officials, adding that the province would need up to 10 million cubic meters of water for consumption this year.

TRAVEL operators have urged authorities to upgrade Buri Ram Airport into an international facility to increase the number of Southeast Asian tourists travelling to the Northeast
Wandee Tiansawakit, former president of the Professional Tourist Guide Association in Buri Ram province, said tourism operators such as hotels and travel companies wanted the government to promote Buri Ram Airport as an international airport as well as add a new cargo terminal to the airport in order to attract more domestic and international airlines.
She said Buri Ram had for years been a famous sports destination thanks to the Buriram United football team and the team's world-class stadium.
She said big matches at the stadium lured the young and families to the province while local organisations had positioned Buri Ram as a meeting and leisure destination thanks to 60 ancient castles there, its unique culture and six inactive volcanoes. "If Buri Ram Airport is promoted as an international airport with a cargo terminal and a customs office, it should attract more domestic and foreign airlines to operate flights there and it will result in the province gaining more tourism business."
If the airport were upgraded, other provinces in the lower Northeast region such as Surin, Srisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani were expected to gain more visitors, especially from Southeast Asia.
Currently, only two budget airlines, Nok Air and Thai AirAsia, use the airport. More than 80 per cent of tourists travelling to the region are from other provinces.
According to Wandee, Buri Ram provincial authorities will open a new gateway to the region at Ban Thok Phet, facilitating cross-border tourism between Thailand and Cambodia.
Numchai Pornpirunroj, owner of Porn Numchai Travel in Nong Khai in the upper Northeast, said most tourists visiting the province were from Vietnam, China, and South Korea. Some retired expatriates from Japan and Western countries lived there.
He urged officials to promote heritage sites in Western markets, such as Ban Chiang-Unesco's pre-historic site and Uncle Ho House in Udon Thani.

SRT launches special train service to Buri Ram to celebrate meatball festival
The State Railway of Thailand launched special train services yesterday for anyone, especially fans of K-pop idol Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban, wanting to celebrate the meatball festival in the northeastern province of Buri Ram. The services will run until September 24th.
SRT Governor Nirut Maneebhandu said that there are seven trains leaving every day from Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Ubon Ratchathani for Buri Ram during the week-long festival.
From Bangkok, the No 135 special train, with four air-conditioned cars, leaves the Bang Sue grand station at 6.40 am and arrives in Buri Ram at 2.19 pm.
From Ubon Ratchathani, there is one special rapid train, with four air-conditioned cars, leaving at 7 am and arriving in Buri Ram at 10.27 am and two local trains, leaving at 6.20 am and 12.35 pm, and arriving in Buri Ram at 9.30 am and 4.15 pm respectively.
From Nakhon Ratchasima, there are three local trains leaving at 6.10 am, 2.20 pm, and 4.50 pm from the provincial railway station, arriving in Buri Ram at 8.08 am, 4.32 pm, and 7.13 pm respectively.
The SRT governor said that the meatball festival is intended to promote domestic tourism and to help distribute income to upcountry provinces.
Grilled and deep-fried meatballs, on sale at stalls in front of Buri Ram railway station, have suddenly become very popular after the K-pop idol Lalisa told a TV talk show last week that her favorite snack in her hometown in Buri Ram is the grilled or deep-fried meatballs, dipped in the chili sauce only found in the province.
People normally eat the meatballs standing in front of the station, hence the signboard “look chin yuen kin”, literally meaning eating meatballs while standing.
The craze for meatballs has been a boon for vendors following the singer’s interview and the recent release of her solo “Lalisa” music video, which attracted 73.6 million views worldwide on YouTube in the first 24 hours following its release, beating the record set by US pop singer Taylor Swift.
