Pattaya: Rebranded "24 hour Walking Street" opens its arms to Thais - and one way traffic!

August 10, 2020

"MGR Online" reported that Walking Street was opening its arms to Thais.
Following a well received trial period the street would be open all day, not just the previous 7 pm to 4 am.

This was to encourage Thai tourism, they said.

There are no foreign tourists at all so the street is trying to appeal to Thais by going 24 hours and offering street food.

And it will also be open from now on to traffic and parking. Though it is one way only to avoid accidents.

After a crisis meeting with local operators, mayor Sontaya Khunpluem said it was obvious that the country was not open and there were no foreign tourists.

So Thais need to be the new normal for Walking Street.

There are plans to promote street food and street food events to encourage domestic tourists.
He said he would be liaising with the culture and tourism ministries to promote various events.

Premrudee Saekhow who fronts an association of north easterners said they would be putting on some special food and drinks parties for Loy Krathong.

Meanwhile the We Love Pattaya site reported that deputy mayor Ronnakit Ekkasingh, police and local dignitaries and tourists took part in a ceremony last week on Wednesday night to open the street to traffic and parking.

He stressed that it would be one way only to avoid accidents.

Two separate fires raged last night in Pattaya.

01 Sept 2020

One was in two rooms at a residential hotel near Walking Street in South Pattaya, the other a massive blaze that raged all night at a depot, restaurant and six story luxury house in North Pattaya.

Fire broke out in room 301 at the Pattaya Inn Hotel off Walking Street around 10 pm.

The fire spread to room 302. Both rooms were completely destroyed causing about 500,000 baht in damage.

It was brought under control within 30 minutes and four fire engines were utilized.

A far bigger fire was raging from 1am in North Pattaya.
This was at a furniture warehouse, old restaurant called "Nai Peun" and adjoining six-story luxury house belonging to the owner of the warehouse.

The luxury house has offices, bedrooms and a fitness area on the top floor.  Everything was completely destroyed.

There were no reports of injuries in either blaze.

Damage was estimated at the North Pattaya blaze as at least 100 million baht.

The causes of both fires are under investigation.

Free Parking for locals & for tourists at Pattaya's Bali Hai Pier

26 Oct. 2021

After numerous complaints that people were soliciting money for parking spaces at Pattaya’s Bali Hai Pier, some reportedly asking for up to 500 baht, city officials have installed signs announcing that parking is free and to report if they are being charged for a space.

The Pattaya News has reported that the free spaces are located at the blue field at the Bali Hai Pier.

Pattaya City Deputy Mayor Wuttisak Reumkitkarn told The Pattaya News the charges are “a scam and are not a Pattaya City policy”.

He added that law enforcement officers have installed a sign, advising that the “area belongs to Pattaya City and that parking is free”.

Signs have also been installed instructing tourists who encounter issues to call 1337, Pattaya’s 24-hour city hotline, to make a report.

Reumkitkarn stressed that the parking area “is free for locals and tourists, especially for domestic tourists who are going to Koh Larn, taking pictures with the Pattaya City signature sign, or going up to the viewpoint or lighthouse area nearby”.

He said that the rationale behind the offer of additional spaces is also to “increase the value proposition” of visiting Koh Larn.

Meanwhile, Reumkitkarn additionally noted that authorities have also been stopping similar scams along Beach Road at Pattaya Beach, where motorists can also expect to find free parking.

Sex workers are unable to access any of the Thai government's unemployment benefits due to their work being illegal

With the pandemic disrupting her usual work, Dao has set up a street food stall

Dao says it has been "lonely and quiet" in Pattaya since foreigners stopped holidaying there

Om, like many others, says she would like sex work to be legalized "so we don't need to be hiding"

Thai sex workers have protested to demand their labor be recognized and regulated by the government

Most of the shops in Pattaya's Walking Street are closed, with some advertised for rent or lease as the pandemic continues

Long queues for food have formed on Pattaya's main beach

All entertainment venues in Thailand have been shut for most of the last two years

Pattaya Music Festival officially postponed until further notice due to rising Covid-19 cases

The Pattaya City Public Relations Department this afternoon (February 24th) confirmed rumors online and officially announced that they have decided to postpone the Pattaya Music Festival due to concerns about rising Covid19 “cases”.

The festival was originally scheduled to be held next month (March).

https://thepattayanews.com/2022/02/19/detail-for-pattaya-music-festival-2022-rules-traffic-closures-and-line-up-released/

Pattaya PR stated that due to many confirmed Covid -19 cases in Pattaya and Chonburi, the event has been postponed until the situation improves. They noted that although Chonburi is heavily vaccinated and Pattaya is over 90% vaccinated with plenty of hospital capacity and although serious cases remained incredibly low, as well as deaths, the concern was having an event that would encourage interprovincial travel from areas with more limited resources.

TPN notes that the decision came only days after local officials assured the event would continue. However, Thailand reinforced the fact they are currently on a “Level 4 alert” for Covid-19, which discourages travel and encourages people to STAY HOME, which as a result caused the Interior Ministry and Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) to “request” that major events, regardless of how many Covid-19 precautions were in place, would be canceled or postponed.

The move has already caused many tourism and business associations to criticize the decision, stating that Pattaya and Thailand need to “live” with Covid-19 and stop canceling and postponing events that hurt tourism. TPN notes the overwhelming response on Thailand social media was negative, with most stating that they felt the decision to postpone was poor and that the event should have moved forward as scheduled. Reasons for continuing the event were Chonburi’s high vaccination rates (number one in Thailand) and low serious cases, nearly all of who were elderly or had many underlying conditions.

No set date for rescheduling the festival was given.
